Hyatt’s five-level award chart: why the travel date matters more in 2026

Hyatt now uses five price levels within its hotel categories; compare the actual dates before moving points.

Hyatt's hotel category is only half of an award search. Its 2026 chart has five redemption levels within each category: Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper and Top. A hotel can stay in the same category while a particular night costs more points than another night. That makes the travel date a useful part of the search.

Read the current chart, then the calendar

Hyatt announced the expansion in February for a May rollout. The old three-level chart is no longer a sound guide to a new booking. Use the current chart for the room type, then check what the hotel actually offers for your dates. A standard room, club room and suite are different awards.

The extra levels do not guarantee that changing the date will produce a cheaper room. They create more possible prices. Search a small range that you could realistically travel, rather than searching an entire year for a low price on an unusable date. Keep the hotel's category and room description with each result.

Test the saving against the trip

Suppose two suitable dates differ by 5,000 points per night for a three-night visit. That would save 15,000 points. If moving the trip adds $240 to the flights and another $60 in transport, those changes cost $300. You are effectively paying $300 to keep 15,000 points, or two cents per point.

That calculation does not tell everyone to move or stay. It makes the trade clear. A traveler with a flexible schedule may find a date change easy. Someone attending a wedding cannot move the event because the award calendar looks better.

Compare the whole visit before choosing the lower column. Also keep the cancellation deadline. The most useful result is an available room on workable dates, with a point price you understand.

For a two-night weekend, write the price of Friday and Saturday separately before adding them. The two dates may use different levels within the same category. If moving the trip by one day saves points, price the extra transport and any lost work time too. A calendar saving only helps when the revised visit still makes sense.

A practical way to decide

Start with a room or flight you would be happy to buy with cash. Match the dates, traveler count and cancellation terms before comparing prices. A cheaper award that changes your plans is a different product. Give that change a cost instead of treating it as a free improvement.

For a points comparison, subtract the award's cash charges from the cash price you would otherwise pay. Divide that saving by the points used. This gives a useful measure of the booking in front of you. It is not a promise about what the same points will buy next month. Compare the result with the next realistic use of your balance.
